Captain’s Log. Stardate 28.03.23

The season is upon us. The clocks have gone forward and for one day at least, 27 March, the sun has shone. It’s been a busty couple of weeks so here’s a short update on events and some dates for the future.

2 DINNERS IN ONE WEEK!

On 17 March I and my wife Diane were the guests of the Curlews at their annual dinner, which was a very enjoyable evening. I waffled on about myself for a few minutes after the meal and then prize winners were presented with their trophies by Diane. There were several multiple winners, with Andrew Tye needing additional transport for all his!! Thanks to the Curlews for a great evening.

Then on 24 March it was the President’s Dinner at which the Captain invites a guest speaker along. My guest was my friend Steven Bottomley, who is a former European Tour professional and finished 3rd at the 1995 Open Championship. Steven and I told the story of that Open week. It was a very enjoyable evening.

CAPTAIN’S DRIVE-IN

Rhys Waugh (Junior Captain), Hilary Pollock (Ladies Captain and myself all hit the ball, which was a result! We totalled 510 yards between us and Mary Dodd had the closest guess of 512 yards.

The matchplay games between the Captain’s and Vice Captain’s teams were played in what can only be described as damp conditions (understatement!), with everyone very gad to get back to the Clubhouse!! The Vice Captain’s team finished 39 up, against the Captain’s 25. So, I’m off to a losing start!!

We enjoyed some food and then we had some games of bingo, a draw for my car park space for 3 lucky winners, and a draw for 2 4-ball vouchers at Tynemouth and Stocksfield.

The bingo was great fun, with plenty of exasperation as people just missed out on winning a line or a full house. It was a good evening for the Ron Hastings/Aidan Potts/Lee Murray table.

Winners of the car park space draw were Jamie Miles, Aidan Potts (told you!) and Joyce Gorst. Winners of the 4-ball vouchers were John Dixon and Paul Thompson. Congratulations to all winners.

A huge thank you to everyone who came to watch the drive-in, played in the golf, played the bingo and bought draw tickets. We raised £500 for the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS), which is brilliant so thanks to everyone for their generosity.

CAPTAIN PRO – START DATE 4 APRIL

Entries for 4 April open on 29 March at 7.00 p.m. so get ready to enter.

CHARITY TEXAS SCRAMBLE – 17 MAY

The Club’s Charity Texas Scramble is on 17 May, with entry at £68 per team. Teams of 4, any combination of players. All proceeds form the day will go to GNAAS. It should be an enjoyable day in good weather…...!

BUNK OFF CARDS – ALL FOR CHARITY

Bunk Off cards are now on sale for the 2023 season. They are £10 as they were last year, and thanks to those who have already purchased one. Feedback reaches me that the lamination is not the best and I apologise, it was all my own work, and I did laminate each card 3 times!!

Thanks to everyone for their support.
